Some may call it art, others balloonacy - but it is certainly unique.

Olivia Post is preparing to embark on an ambitious project to build a giant sculpture to mark the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings - entirely out of balloons.

The Battle-based balloon artist wants the sculpture to depict the pivotal moment in the Battle when Harold was shot in the eye.

Olivia, who grew up in Sedlescombe and was educated at Claverham Community College, is a member of the Balloon Artists Guild.

The group, which includes several award-winning balloon artists, meets regularly to advance the art of balloon twisting and regularly attend international balloon events.

Last year some members helped create the world’s biggest balloon maze at the Millennium Balloon Jam, held in Belgium.

Members of the Balloon Artists Guild will be helping towards the 1066 balloon project.

Olivia, who runs creative entertainment company Racingsnail, said: “The plan is to install a balloon sculpture creating the piece on Monday October 17 to October 20.

“This build time could be shorter depending on the complexity of the design.

“The installation will be ready for viewing Friday October 21.”

But there is slight snag - Olivia needs a large indoor venue to accommodate her balloon masterpiece.

She said: “We need an internal space to build the sculpture and to display the final piece.

“It is easier if the build and display space can be the same area as the sculpture may be difficult to move.

“We need dimensions of the space that is available so we can calculate how many balloons we will need and what design to complete.

“And we will need to raise funds to cover the cost of the balloons and one lead balloon tutor.”

If you have a large venue which could accommodate Olivia’s balloon sculpture, or if you would like to help the project financially, please contact Olivia on 07890 548743.
