A ‘very small’ fire had started in one of the kilns in the art department, a college spokesperson told the Observer.

He added: “It was put out quite quickly, but the resulting smoke triggered the alarm.”

Students and staff were evacuated and firefighters raced to the scene.

Everyone was allowed back inside the building a short time later.
