Tug O War man Jamie ropes his girl into tying the knot

TUG O’ War competitor Jamie Copeland successfully roped his girlfriend into marrying him after he proposed in front of hundreds of onlookers on Saturday.

Jamie, 33, of Edmond Road, sprang into action before Louise Patten was about to start her first pull for the Hastings & St Leonards Angling Club down at The Stade.

He grabbed the MCs microphone, got down on one knee and as the crowd tried to catch its breath, asked Louise, 40, if she would marry him before producing a ring.

To rapturous cheers and applause from the crowd, Louise agreed to “tie the knot.”

But there was no time to hang around as Louise went straight into action for her first pull.

The couple met five years ago at the competition and have been roped in together ever since.

Jamie, who pulled for the Angling Club’s mens team, said: “You could say I pulled! I was really nervous especially in front of so many people.

“I plan to get married next year on a boat out at sea here before returning to take part in the Tug O War.

“I’ve been doing the competition for nine years and absolutely love it.

“And next year will be the best ever.”

Jamie’s proposal put a spring in the step of Louise’s team as they finished third in the Ladies competition.
