A COMPETITION to encourage amateur photographers to get snapping during the Fat Tuesday festivities has been introduced this year.

The panel of judges for The Fat Photo competition includes internationally acclaimed photographer Andrew Catlin.

He has captured on camera many high profile figures over the years.

He said: “For me a great photograph needs to have a sense of intrigue. There needs to be a reason to revisit it again and again.

“At its best photography makes a direct connection to the event or the person observed.

“The best pictures arise from an immediate or deeper intention, which will play a part in the technical side, but also include spontenaity. If a subject is too set up or directed the image becomes stilted. There has to be movement and life in an image for it to come to life.”

However, perhaps most importantly, he offered the following tip: “Look before you shoot, and don’t walk backwards to get the right position when there’s a drop behind you!”

Andrew has worked extensively with NME, and his photographs are featured on albums by Nick Cave, New Order, and The Pixies, among others. The scope of his work takes in direction, graphic design, documentary work, music videos and books.

Those entering The Fat Photo contest are encouraged to try to capture the essence of the festival.

There will be will be a £150 cash prize for the best overall photo and three runners-up will receive £50 Marriott’s Photo Stores gift tokens.

The runner-up categories are: best live action shot, best audience photograph and the most liked image on Facebook.

Also on the judging panel will be official Fat Tuesday photographer John Fox, and photographer Alexander Brattell.

A maximum of three photographs per person may be entered, and entrants must not be professional photographers.
