THIS year’s winners of the Order of 1066 Award are Rod Pelling and his wife Mildred, for services to the Poppy Appeal.

They were presented with the accolade by Mayor, councillor Alan Roberts on Sunday.

Mildred first helped her mother sell poppies at the age of 11, and has worked for the Poppy Appeal for the last 65 years. In 1990 she became poppy appeal organiser for Hastings and St Leonards, increasing the amount raised year on year, reaching £57,000 last year.

She has helped the Friends of the Conquest Hospital raise money, and in 2010 was elected onto the committee.

Mildred helped raise funds for the refurbishment of the town’s war memorial in Alexandra Park, and has also helped the local veterans’ association with the Veterans Day celebrations.

Rod served five years in the RAF at RAF Lyneham, where he was an aero engine mechanic. He has in the past campaigned to restore the Alexandra Park war memorialand is chairman of the local Royal British Legion.
