VOLUNTEERS helped clear overgrown paths and steps at Summerfields Woods.

The council’s Ranger service got a team together at the Bohemia Walled Garden within the woodland on Saturday, September 8.

Cllr Emily Westley, lead member for leisure and amenities at Hastings Borough Council, said: “We all got stuck into clearing overgrown vegetation and repairing steps and paths, it was so enjoyable, with a barbecue afterwards for our efforts. The evening was rounded off with a moth watch where visitors saw the many species that inhabit the woods.

“The time given by volunteers is invaluable as there is no gardening contract for these green spaces and we rely heavily on the generosity of volunteers and the local community to keep all the paths through the woods open which in turn improves habitats for the extensive wildlife.”

Friends of Summerfields Woods are seeking a new chairman as the inaugural member, Derek Binns, will be stepping down towards the end of the year.
