The results of the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner election are due to be announced after 2pm today (Friday May 6).

The central count for the county will take place at the Sussex National near Uckfield.

The five candidates are Conservative incumbent Katy Bourne, the Green Party’s James Doyle, Labour’s Michael Jones, UKIP’s Patrick Lowe, and Lib Dem James Walsh.

The supplementary vote system is used in PCC elections. This means that voters are asked to vote for their first and second choice candidates by using the two columns on the ballot paper.

They are asked to put a cross in the first column to mark their first choice candidate, and the cross in the second column to mark their second choice candidate.

The first preferences are counted and if one candidate receives more than 50 per cent of all the first preference votes, they are elected.

If no candidate has received more than 50 per cent of the first preference votes on all ballot papers, then the two candidates with most first preference votes go through to the second round.

This involves counting all the second preference votes on the ballot papers of those voters who did not show a first preference or either of the two second round candidates.

These votes are then added to those first preference votes of the second round candidates and the candidate with the most votes wins.
