NEWSAGENTS are being targeted as part of a county council crackdown on the safety of paper boys and girls.
Staff from East Sussex County Council are visiting stores across 1066 Country to remind bosses of their responsibilities to young employees. They have already visited secondary schools to make sure youngsters are clued-up about their rights and how many hours they can do.
Councillor Nick Bennett said: “There are rules that apply when young people work and it’s really important that both the employers and the young people themselves are aware of them.”
“Part-time work can be a really good thing, introducing young people to the world of work and giving them the chance to earn a bit of extra pocket money.
“However, it’s also vitally important we ensure young people are not exploited in any way and that nothing compromises their safety.”
