St Leonards community hall's makeover by unemployed young adults

A St Leonards community hall has been given a makeover thanks to dedicated volunteers from a project aimed at helping unemployed young adults gain skills.

A group of 11 unemployed 18-24 year-olds spent six weeks working at Pulse School of Movement in Cornfield Terrace, St Leonards, through Build Yourself.

The hall runs a range of dance, drama and circus classes for children, those aged over 50, and adults with learning difficulties.

The hardworking Build Yourself volunteers plastered walls, painted the room to make it look more vibrant and colourful, and carried out repair work to dado rails.

A celebration event was held at the hall to mark their achievements and they were presented with toolkits and vouchers in front of their family and friends on November 25.

Speaking at the event, Molly Durman, 22, one of the Build Yourself volunteers, said: “I have gained both confidence and DIY skills.

“I’d definitely say to people to come onto the course – it’s worthwhile and you meet new people.

“The group were really friendly and the tutors were so nice.”

Charity Fresh Visions runs Build Yourself which gives low-waged and unemployed young adults the opportunity to learn DIY skills.

There are even opportunities to gain a construction skills certification scheme card, the leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry.

Project coordinator Naomi Mileham said: “I’m so proud of this group. It’s been amazing to watch their confidence grow while seeing them transform the hall at the same time.

“This project really helps young people realise their worth and talent. And four of the group have gained employment since starting the course which is fantastic news.”
