Millie’s Nightclub in Hastings celebrates a decade of being there for vulnerable adults and adults with disabilities this month.

The club, which was set up by Millie Rowland, has become a real success story.

It opens on the second Friday of each month at the Green Rooms, behind Robertson Street.

Millie said: “I started this nightclub for my little sister who has cerebral palsy and holts oram syndrome. When she turned 18 she wanted to go clubbing so I took her and a friend out but they struggled with the lateness of the club opening and with how drunk people were, bumping into them.

“This got me thinking about opening a nightclub for adults with disabilities. I approached the Brass Monkey and set a date, and then set about creating flyers and travelling all around Hastings and Bexhill to all the care homes and day centres I was aware off. On June 17 2006, Millie’s Nightclub was born.

“We have a regular slot- the second Friday of every month- which allows care homes and families to book other engagements around us and creates consistency for the people who attend.

“By coincidence, a group of disabled adults were holidaying in Hastings, staying at the Chatsworth and the manager explained my nightclub to them and now they book their holiday every year to coincide with the nightclub.

“The Green Rooms is part of the Chatsworth and we have a wonderful relationship with the current manager and his staff team.

We are currently in the process of becoming a charity. We are fully self-sufficient, with no reliance on funding, but I want to ensure the nightclubs future.”
