Southwater Reading Group

The group held their last meeting on Friday, December 5.

Most of us think of Frankenstein as a monster, but on reading Mary Shelley's book we realised Frankenstein is in fact the scientist who creates the monster.

This was a shortish, gripping and dramatic book, although some of us found her style of writing unnessarily long winded and occassionaly complicated.

It was a great read for a book group as it definitely provoked strong opinions. Frankenstein, having created his monster, then rejects him, leaving him friendless in a world new to him.

The book is as relevant today as it was when it was written, as it raises the issues of the dangers of scientists playing God, and whether anyone should allow their interests to become so obsessive that they don't consider the consequences of their actions and how what they do will affect others. We finished the evening with a few games and a great spread. Our next meeting will be on January 2 at 7pm, when we will be discussing The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, and poetry by Calvin Humphries.
