Former Communards star Sarah Jane Morris is performing at the Masonic Hall, St Leonards, on Friday September 4 as part of the Coastal Currents Festival.

Sarah, who, recently featured on Radio 4’s Women’s Hour and Jazz FM, is showcasing her new album Bloody Rain.

She is known for her opulent, multi-octave voice and raw emotional clout recalling Nina Simone and Janis Joplin.

Her uncompromising lyrics explore love and pain, sex crimes, war crimes, Catholicism and contraception.

Sarah Jane Morris sang with The Happy End, a 21-piece brass band named after Bertolt Brecht, Elisabeth Hauptmann and Kurt Weill’s musical play, playing a circuit that included Brighton’s Zap Club and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

She found fame initially with the Communards, who are best known for their hit “Don’t Leave Me This Way”. She featured prominently on many Communards tracks, her low vocal range contrasting with Jimmy Somerville’s falsetto.

She has also recorded as a solo artist, releasing albums since 1989.

The St Leonards concert will include popular hits like “Don’t leave me this Way” and “Me and Mrs Jones” alongside tracks from her newly released album, which has been described in the music press as a ‘masterpiece’.

Doors open at 7pm and the concert runs from 8pm – 10.30pm.

Tickets are £12 or £10 concessions from Land of Green Ginger, in the High Street, Hastings Old Town, the Masonic Hall and Hastings Information Centre at Priory Meadow.
