Scooters back in town

Oolder residents might have thought the Mods had returned to Hastings on Saturday when a scooter rally took place in the town.

More than a hundred funky Lambrettas and other mopeds were on show at The Stade during the two-day event.

Chairman of the local 1066 Saxons Scooter Club, Michael Wootton, said the rally was organised in conjunction with The Lambretta Club of Great Britain.

"It was hopefully the first of many to come," he said. "We would like it to become a big national event and are already planning another next year."

They were expecting about 200 scooter fans, but because of the rain the number dropped to 120.

Said Michael: "On the Friday night we went to Old Town pubs where 'scooter music' was played and on Saturday we went to the Robin Hood pub at Icklesham where there was a barbecue and custom show where we could admire everyone's machines.

"They ranged from factory condition to customized with murals and some of racing spec'. It was a big mixture.

"The event culminated with a big do at the White Rock Theatre's Sussex Hall on Saturday night which was attended by 250 to 300 people."

Michael, who owns a 1959 Lambretta, said they were now planning a similar event for 2009 to take place in April or May.
