Retired couple’s home-recorded album generates more than £200 for church

A RETIRED couple in their late 70s have generated more than £200 for their local church after recording an album in their living room in just one day.

June and Ron Hudson have sold dozens of copies of their album, Nowadays, and have donated the proceeds, £210, to King’s Church on The Ridge.

The couple have also given the CD to the church to sell, with the revenue going towards various community projects carried out by King’s.

Ron said: “We wanted to do it for all they have done for us. We have felt at home ever since we have been going to them. They are just very caring. They do such a lot for the community, they do the food bank and help people with drink problems and they go out into the town doing work to make Hastings a better place for people.”

Tracks on the album include classics such as Sitting on Top of the World and As Time Goes By and are sung by June, a talented singer who has performed at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool.

The pair are themselves no strangers to helping the community. When they moved to Hastings in 2000, they spent five years singing to delighted residents in local residential homes. Two years ago June began performing occasionally at Elizabeth Court Rest Home where June’s brother Brian, who sadly passed away in September, was a resident. In October, the couple brought a new amplifier and, encouraged by their GP ‘to just go for it,’ they recorded the album in March.

June said: “I really want to thank John Humphries who wrote about me for the Bohemia Village Voice, he really kick-started it all. He got me on the internet. It’s all quite flattering. Just yesterday a couple at the church said how they enjoyed listening to the album while they were eating dinner.”

June’s success didn’t stop there. On June 8 Bob Roberts played some of her songs on BBC Sussex as part of his Unforgettable programme which airs every Sunday at 9pm. Natalie Williams, community engagement manager at King’s, said: “It is fantastic and very kind of June and Ron to donate the proceeds.” The album is available for £5.
