Refugees remembered in colourful annual event

MUSIC, dance and food from around the world helped mark the annual Refugee Week event.

Council leader Jeremy Birch and Mayor Alan Roberts were guest of honour at the event held at Concordia Hall in St Leonards on June 13.

Hastings Intercultural Organisation and the Link project organised the celebration.

Music and song from places such as Rwanda, Kurdistan and India was provided. A performance of tapla and sitar was also inlcuded.

Pupils form Star of the Sea primary school sang their hearts out in a special choir.

Alex Ntung, refugee and community cohesion officer for the council, said: “The event is a great way to bring people together from different

communities.” HIO chairman Oli Rahman said: “Refugees do not willingly leave their family and homes. Most do not leave even with a final destination in mind.”
