A RADIO station like no other where tracks by local artists are played alongside those of superstars, Hastings Rock, returns to the airwaves.

This year is the 20th anniversary of the station’s existence, and will be the 16th broadcast.

In Hastings, Bexhill and the surrounding areas, Hastings Rock will be on air from May 4 to 31 on 87.7FM and online at hastingsrock.co.uk.

Chairman of Hastings Rock Andy Gunton said that while many people have a specific idea of what constitutes rock music, listeners are likely to hear everything from Elvis to Muse to Led Zeppelin.

DJs will play rhythm and blues, rock and roll, prog rock, heavy rock, and there will be request shows.

Andy himself will present a local music show on Sunday evenings from 8pm to 10pm, during which all types of music will be played, not just rock.

He said: “For most of the local bands, this is the only time they will hear themselves on the radio.”

Everyone working on the radio station from the 15 DJs to technical experts is a volunteer.

Andy said: “We are there because we like the music, and I like to think that comes across.”

Hastings Rock will again this year be supporting St Michael’s Hospice.

The main sponsor is Booker and Best Ltd, and Andy said that without the support of local companies, the radio station would not be in a position to broadcast each year.

Between 6am and midnight live shows will be broadcast from the Kings Head pub, in Rye Road, and outside of these hours an automated system will take over.
