A PRIMARY school chess club celebrated Hastings Day, last Friday (October 14), in their own special way.

Members of All Saints CE Junior School chess club, Harri and William, participated in a live game of chess, competing to see who could win the modern-day battle.

The chess club, led by parents, meets weekly at school to participate in chess matches, tournaments and local championships, including the Maureen Charlesworth Chess Championship, where the winner this week was a member of the school and the runner-up an ex-member of the school.

Headteacher, Cecy Kemp said, ‘We are very proud of our chess club, which has grown in size steadily since it started in 2009.

“We are very grateful to Mr Woodhams who runs it with such enthusiasm and to his wife who provided such creative hats for our live chess game.

“Chess has grown in popularity in the school with a large number of pupils choosing to spend their playtimes and lunchtimes playing matches against each other.”
