THE ANNUAL Poppy Appeal for Hastings will start tomorrow (Saturday) in Priory Meadow Shopping Centre, the first in a series of events over the coming few weeks.

A tombola stall will be held outside the Marks and Spencer store from 9am to 5pm.

Tickets are priced 25p a go or five for £1. Prizes will include toys and games.

Hastings branch members of the Royal British Legion are hoping to beat last year’s grand total of £50,000 through a number of fundraising events.

To mark the official start of the Poppy Appeal Week there will be a garden of remembrance service in Alexandra Park on November 5.

Visitors will be able to buy and place a badged cross for £3 and the service starts at 11am.

On Sunday November 13, the annual Remembrance Day Civic Parade will take place in the town centre starting at 10.30am.

In the evening there will be a festival of remembrance at the White Rock Theatre. The event starts at 7pm and admission is through buying a programme at £2.50.

Rod Pelling, branch chairman, is appealing for volunteers to help sell the poppy badges at venues across the town during Poppy Week.

He said: “Hastings was the best performing county town last year and we would dearly like to repeat that success again this year.

“With the help of the good people of this town I’m sure we can do it.”
