A GROUP of dedicated fundraisers have smashed their previous record by collecting £55,000 in just two weeks for the annual Poppy Appeal.

The hard-working members of the Hastings branch went onto the streets between October 29 and November 13 fundraising at events across the town.

They raised £5,000 more than last year and the money will be used to support former servicemen, serving forces members and their families.

Branch appeal organiser Mildred Pelling said she was overwhelmed by the public’s generosity especially during such difficult financial times.

Mrs Pelling, of Northampton Way, St Leonards, started collecting for the appeal with her mother in 1935.

Now aged 76, she says the public’s generosity never ceases to amaze.

“It is strange that even during hard times people seem to give more,” said Mrs Pelling. “We are now one of the best performing branches in Sussex.

“And we can’t thank the people and businesses of Hastings and St Leonards enough for their support.”
