Plans unveiled by Hastings and Rye's MP to force firms to publish lists of foreign workers has been '˜misinterpreted', according to ministers.

During the Tory Party Conference, Home Secretary Amber Rudd promised to get immigration ‘under control’ by announcing proposals to tighten restrictions on work and student visas, a crackdown on illegal immigration, and a £140m controlling migration fund.

But suggestions that firms would be forced to publish the percentage of foreign workers they employ have been roundly criticised.

Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon suggested that the policy had been ‘slightly misinterpreted’ speaking on the BBC’s Pienaar’s Politics programme yesterday (Sunday October 9).

He said: “We will not be asking companies to list or name, to publish or identify in any way the number of foreign workers they have.”

The information would only be shared internally by the Government, which would allow ministers to examine the effectiveness of the current rules around workers from overseas.

Nick Perry, the Lib Dem’s current parliamentary candidate for Hastings and Rye, said the policy was an example of Ms Rudd ‘speaking before she thinks’.
