Pier campaign gathers pace as locals dig deep
THE campaign to save Hastings Pier stepped up a gear this week with more residents coming up with fundraising ideas to help restore the iconic attraction.
Since the devastating arson attack last month, The Hastings Pier and White Rock Trust (HPWRT) has reiterated its determination to bring the pier back to its former glory.
And businesses and individuals have answered the call to arms with a number of money-making ideas.
An eco-shop keeper has called on traders across the town to dig deep for the pier. Josie Richards of Eco Magpie in Queens Road, which specialises in sustainable products, will be donating 10 per cent of tomorrow’s takings to the trust, and she has called on fellow businesses to do the same.
She said: “Everyone is spending more over Christmas so with the extra sales it only seems right to be giving something back. This community has supported the businesses and we should support the community.”
Milkshake bar Shakeaway has already stepped up to the plate, creating a special Save the Pier milkshake last weekend from which all the proceeds went to the HPWRT.
Manager Paul Fairbrother said: “Every cafe in town should be getting involved - we all rely on tourism and the pier brings in tourists.”
Meanwhile Conquest Hospital porter Michael Strevett, 60, is collecting sponsorship in his bid to lose four stone. Mr Strevett, of Battle Road, St Leonards, started off at 18 stone 10 pounds but has already got down to 18 stone. He said: “I still have a long way to go and have raised more than £200 in sponsorship so far with quite a bit of cash yet to come in.
“All of the guys here in the portering department and the hospital staff have been very supportive. Money raised will go towards helping the HPWRT which I am heavily involved in.”
Mr Strevett has placed collection boxes in the hospital’s cafe and around the wards - if anyone would like to sponsor him contact they can call him on 01424 755255, extension 6375.
