A COMEDIAN who made a joke about the Hastings Pier fire as it was still burning is bringing his new show to the theatre opposite the famous landmark.
Dom Joly - who shot to fame on Trigger Happy TV and recently came fourth in ITV’s I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here - is bringing his tour to the White Rock Theatre in July, with promoters promising a “laugh-out-loud show” detailing his many adventures around the world.
But on the morning of October 5, with Hastings Pier still ablaze, Mr Joly posted to his 55,000 followers on social networking site Twitter: “Had a great night out in Hastings last night, all got a bit messy, can’t remember much but woke up smelling of petrol...”
While some enjoyed the gag, others took offence to the gag and the Observer encouraged people to let him know if they felt it was in poor taste, at which point he accused the paper of wasting time trying to manufacture a row.
He then carried on his rant in a column in the following weekend’s Independent on Sunday newspaper, where he accused the Observer of trying to start a “Daily Mail-wannabe campaign.”
Tickets for the show, which cost £20.50, are on sale now.
