Photo competition to challenge perceptions of mental illness

A DIGITAL photography competition aiming to change attitudes towards mental health launches next Thursday (September 1).

Positive Images: Picture A World Without Stigma, the annual competition organised by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, is open to all Sussex residents.

Photographs should aim to tackle the stigma surrounding mental health issues, but creativity is welcomed and entries can be on any subject.

Jim Holden, Sussex-based photographer and member of the judging panel, said: “For the second year running the judges are inviting people from all walks of life whether they have used mental health services or not to rise to the challenge of tackling mental health stigma.

“Last year’s competition was a great success with entries ranging from still life art to landscapes and portraits and this year we hope to build on this to increase understanding and change attitudes in an interesting and creative way.”

There will be two awards, one photo selected by a panel of professional judges and the other selected by an online poll where members of the public can vote for their favourite image.

Entry is free and the winning photos will be announced on World Mental Health Day on October 10.

The deadline for entries is October 3, at 9am. For more information visit www.sussexpartnership.nhs.uk/positiveimage/
