A COUPLE celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in the same church they were married in 50 years ago.
Pat and David Smart, of Moscow Road, spent the weekend surrounded by friends and family, including their three children and seven grandchildren.
On Sunday (August 28), following the service at Halton Baptist Church, Old London Road, they hosted a buffet lunch for family members, and all those in the congregation.
Pat, 70, a retired social worker, said: “It felt right to have a celebration there, in the place that we were married.
“It was an emotional weekend.”
The pair have lived in Hastings all their lives and met aged around 12, when Pat was in the Girls’ Life Brigade, and David, the Boys’ Brigade, groups affiliated to Halton Baptist Church, although did not become a couple until the age of 18.
Pat trained as a teacher, and after having children, later became a social worker.
David, 71, began as a carpenter before working for the GPO (later BT) for 30 years.
Both have been active members of both Halton Baptist Church and their community over the years.
Pat said that there was no secret to a long and happy marriage.
“It is a bit of give and take, and you have your ups and downs like anyone,” she added. “We have been lucky, I think living in Hastings has been good for us. There are some amazing people here.”
