AN INSPIRATIONAL former headteacher has been presented with a special Papal award after more than 30 years service in Catholic education.

Angela O’Connor retired in July from Sacred Heart School in Old London Road after 17 years as headteacher and more than 13 years as a teacher.

Mrs O’Connor, who already has an OBE for services to education, was presented with a Bene Merenti medal by Bishop Kieran Conry during an Advent mass last month.

The medal means ‘Well Deserved’ and is awarded for services to Catholic education.

Under her guidance the school has been rated Outstanding by Ofsted since 2001.

Father John O’Brien, governor at Sacred Heart, said: “Mrs O’Connor has been an outstanding headteacher.

“We were only too pleased to nominate her for the award and we know that she is sorely missed at the school.”
