A new bookshop bar from a London wine company is being officially launched in Hastings tomorrow night (Friday, August 27).
Borough Wines, Beers & Books will be opened at 6pm on Robertson Street as well as from 10.30am on Saturday.
The new shop is owned by Borough Wines who intend to hold literary readings and an eclectic collection of books curated by broadcaster Michael Smith and poet Will Burns.
Co-owner Corinna Pyke grew up in nearby Sedlescombe and attended art school in the town.
“There is a wonderful community spirit in Hastings and an exciting programme of reinvigoration, being driven by creativity and entrepreneurship,” she said.
“In many ways, this makes it similar to the London neighbourhoods we chose for our previous shops, and it’s something we can’t wait to be part of.”
The new shop will become the seventh Borough Wines shop and the first outside of London.
The shop will be run by Jess Scarratt, who was previously director of Borough Wines’ wholesale arm, Expression du Terroir, alongside Michael who will oversee the literary side of the business.
Corinna is excited to bring her company back to where she grew up and believes it will be a valuable addition to the town.
“The Borough Wines shops are all distinct and designed to respond to the individual needs of the neighbourhoods they are in.
“The new store will be no different and we hope that the added literary element will see it become a hub for Hastings’ writers and literary fans, as well as wine-lovers.
“As our only shop outside the capital, this is a significant step for the company. Under Jess’ steer it will also form a base from which we can develop our wholesale operations in the South East.
“On a personal level, it is also a very meaningful one for me because of my own connections to the town.”
Find the new shop at 34 Robertson Street, America Ground, Hastings, TN34 1HT.
