THE speed limit is being cut from 30mph to 20mph on streets in the Old Town from today, Monday, July 18.
The new limit is in force from Croft Road in the west to Tackleway in the east, excluding the A259 along the sea front and The Bourne.
The original request was submitted to East Sussex County Council in 2009 by the borough council leader Jeremy Birch after representations from residents and businesses.
He says the narrow roads of the Old Town make the area particularly suited to a reduced speed limit.
Cllr Birch said: “We have had solid support from county council staff, and this is a test case for a 20mph speed limit in other parts of Hastings.
“I would be happy to hear from other residents who would like to propose a 20mph zone in their area.”
