Shortest ever hospital waits in Hastings and Rye

Some great news for patients in Hastings and Rye just recently. The NHS now has the shortest waits since its records began!

For those who don't know the NHS was born on the 5th of July 1948 after the Labour Government of Clement Attlee passed the National Health Service Act. It is now a national treasure that has been changing lives for over 60 years. And new data shows that at the Conquest and across England the NHS has met its target to treat patients within a maximum of 18 weeks from referral by their GP – a benchmark which was unimaginable 12 years ago.

Of course the average wait is now far less than 18 weeks and suspected cancer sufferers are always seen within two weeks.

This is a tremendous achievement by NHS clinicians and staff at the Conquest who should be proud of the difference their hard work has made to the experience of NHS patients.

Whenever statistics are released it's easy to forget that behind every figure is a real person who has had their life transformed by being treated. When I talk to patients they have always told me they want to be treated sooner and achieving the shortest waits since records began has made a huge difference to their experiences of the NHS. Under the last Tory government in the 1990s it was not uncommon for people to wait 18 months or more for their operation – with some people dying on the waiting list.

The NHS is one of our country's greatest achievements and I will always stand up for it. I'm proud that over Labour's years in government, we have made sure the NHS has the staff it needs and backed them to deliver improvements in standards and driving down waits. This news is further evidence that this investment is working. There remains more to be done but we are on the right path.
