"Over to You" – New Years Resolutions for Hastings and Rye (and a bit about snow)
As I sit writing this in my London Office the outside world seems to be experiencing some kind of mini ice age with millions of unique snow flakes billowing around parliament square.
It really is quite something to see Big Ben and Westminster Abbey engulfed in a blizzard.
Tonight and tomorrow you will see two kinds of story in our media. Some will decry our incapability as a country to deal with a snowshower. There will be photos of stuck cars and cancelled trains. Undoubtedly there will be some indignant headline about the 'wrong type of snow' and the fact that you 'couldn't make it up!' I appreciate how frustrating this will be for some people but I also want to take a moment to mention the second kind of story.
Decent snowfall is a rare thing and a near unique opportunity for fun. I've just spoken to a friend in Hastings and she tells me she can see children sledding on the East Hill. School's closed through no fault of their own and I say make the most of it! I'm sure everyone remembers 'Snowday' at the start of February last year – grown men and women (and a few Parliamentarians) indulged in snowball fights and snowmen and despite all the news about a 'lack of industrial snow ploughs in central London' I'm pretty sure most people enjoyed their (ahem) enforced absence from work.
So I suggest that, if the snow hasn't melted by the time you read this, you take the chance to engage in a little 'winter warfare' or snowman making while you have the chance.
Now, moving onto slightly more serious matters we have just entered a new year and a new decade. Happy new year!
Many of us make resolutions that will, in theory, make us happier and healthier human beings. In a poll conducted by the Hastings Observer 80% believed that Hastings had changed for the better over the past ten years. That's great but what about the next ten years? What are your resolutions for the town? What is your "2020 vision" for Hastings?
Send us your ideas of the changes you would like to see. There are two categories – a) The best overall idea and b) the best idea that costs nothing. Each winner will receive a prize of "dinner for two" at the House of Commons.
Send your entries to 84 Bohemia Road St Leonards TN37 6RN or email mp@1066.net. The closing date is the 31st of January 2010.
I look forward to reading your ideas.
