Don't let the Conservatives put the recovery at risk
When Hastings and Rye was faced with a global recession and the worst financial crisis in 60 years, Labour was not prepared to let the recession take its course.
Our priority was to protect homes, jobs and businesses. Unemployment is never a 'price worth paying'!
We've taken action to support people and the economy. If we'd repeated the experience of the Tory recession in the 1990s, house repossessions and businesses failures would have been twice as high; and another 1.7m more people would have lost their jobs. In Hastings alone we have seen millions invested through the Working Neighbourhood Fund and Future Jobs Programme.
In the early 90s recession crime soared. Last week, crime fell again. This drop in crime is good news and shows that Britain has not been broken.
Now Britain has officially come out of recession and things are getting better. But we need to be cautious. I don't want to put the recovery in Hastings and Rye at risk by making deep cuts now. The last thing our area needs is for this recovery to be wrecked.
At the General Election you will face a big choice about how we deal with our economic recovery.
Labour will secure the recovery and make sure hard working people benefit from the upturn: We will halve the deficit in four years by cutting waste and low priority spending, boosting growth and bringing in fair taxes including the new 50p rate for those earning over 150,000 and a levy on bankers bonuses.
The Tories would cut support to the economy now. If they cut the deficit even one year faster than we are, they need to find 26 billion more – the equivalent of cutting half the schools and early years budget or putting VAT up to 23%.
We will use the tax on bankers' bonuses to pay for a guarantee of education, training place or a job for young people. The Tories refuse to match this guarantee.
The Conservatives threaten our economic recovery. They would cut support to the economy, hitting people on middle incomes in the pocket and cutting services we all rely on.
They would cut schools funding. And scrap Labour's guarantee of education, training or a job for young people out of work. They would scrap your right to see a cancer specialist within two weeks. They would cut the equivalent of 3,500 police from your streets this year. They would cut Sure Start, cut child tax credits and child trust funds for families.
And instead of helping hard working families they want to bring in a tax giveaway of 200,000 to the wealthiest 3,000 estates in the country. So while the economy is recovering, under the Tories families would lose child tax credits and the child trust fund. But millionaires stand to gain a 200, 000 tax cut.
Labour fought the recession and we won't let the recovery fail. Don't let the Conservatives put the recovery at risk.
