National Apprenticeship Week 2016 has been hailed a success by Sussex Coast College Hastings after a week of apprenticeship themed events.

The college held three events at the Station Plaza campus and visited a number of local secondary schools to talk about apprenticeships and career opportunities.

The college held a progression evening to help young people, and their parents, find out about apprenticeships. The evening provided career advice from a number of experts including My Future Starts Here and Hastings Direct, along with the Work-based Learning Team at the college. The team were also able to premier their new Apprenticeship film to give guests a greater insight into becoming an apprentice.

Towards the end of the week the college held an employer’s breakfast, in partnership with FSB. The morning networking session attracted over 50 local business owners, who were treated to breakfast in the college’s Coast restaurant and tours of the building. The morning proved very worthwhile as 6 new businesses registered their interest in taking on an apprentice in the near future and working in partnership with the college.

The week was rounded off with an awards ceremony to celebrate the college’s apprentices. 9 apprentices were nominated in 5 different categories and invited, along with their families, to join the college and employers for an afternoon of awards and a 3 course meal.

The awards were presented to the winners and runners-up by Tony Campbell, Chair of the Corporation, with a special recognition prize presented by Click4reg, who sponsored the award.

Gill Ramsay, Apprenticeship Team at Sussex Coast College Hastings, said: “This week has been fantastic. It’s been extremely busy and hectic, but hugely successful.”

“We’ve spoken to hundreds of students at schools and at our events, and had half a dozen new businesses approach us to take on an apprentice. We’re really excited by the new business partnerships as it means greater employment opportunities for young people in the area.”
