A £4MILLION project to flush out 800 miles of water mains is under way.

Southern Water started its three-year programme earlier this month, with piping in Malvern Way, Brendon Rise and Mendip Gardens already cleaned out.

And this week the team moves on to Fairlight Road, Mill Lane, Old London Road and Beacon Road – with Rye Road and Rock Lane next on the list.

The flushing helps prevent discoloured water coming out of customers’ taps and works by using hydrants to force water through the mains to dislodge anything wedged in which could cause problems.

Southern Water’s Nick Schroder said: “The process only takes a few hours in each area but the benefits will last well into the future.”
