Fittingly the launch took place on the pier itself on Saturday morning and Town Crier John Bartholomew helped spread the news of the new publication.

The book, entitled ‘A Pier Without Peer’ follows the story of the coastal landmark from the drilling of the first pile in December 1869 to it rising from the ashes this year after the devastating fire of 2010.

Also present was André Palfrey-Martin who was a DJ on the pier in the late 1960s and 70s and who wrote one chapter of the new book.

The also book contains the first detailed history of the long-lost St Leonards Pier that stood near the Royal Victoria Hotel.

Hastings pier was the first to have a mult-purpose entertainments pavilion as part of its design, a feature soon widely adopted by piers across the country.
