THE mayor of Hastings has assumed an historic role that dates back more than 650 years.

Cllr Kim Forward this week took on the speakership of the Cinque Ports, an honour that comes to Hastings every seven years and an office that is said to go back to 1357, nearly 20 years before the first ever Speaker of the House of Commons was appointed.

She received the special speaker’s badge from her predecessor - the Mayor of Sandwich - at a seafront ceremony and will hold the honour until May 21 next year.
