A series of popular street markets will be returning to St Leonards this year.

Having tested the water last year with successful one-off events linked in to the annual St Leonards Festival in July, a bijou season on the Cross Street car park as well as the Frost Fayre at the end of November, market coordinator Anton Burton said he is confident the markets’ success will be repeated in 2015.

The market is all about creating a bit of a buzz and getting people to come together to buy, sell, eat, talk and make new friends

This year, he will be hosting eight monthly markets in the heart of the town in Kings Road, usually running on the first Saturday of the month with the exception of July and November.

The new season starts on Saturday, April 4, when a traffic-free Kings Road will be given over to a riot of colourful gazebos housing upwards of 30 stalls, offering a club mix of products from artisan crafts, street food, vintage and collectable items through to fashion.

Anton said: “I am really proud of the offer, which truly offers something for everyone, and at a reasonable price. A bit like St Leonards itself.”

With space for up to 50 pitches, there is still room to expand and anyone looking to sell quality products is invited to get in touch with him.

Anton added: “Street food always sells well, so stalls doing exciting things for the taste buds are really welcome. And, being very specific, we are really keen to find someone up for selling fresh fish.”

In addition to the main business of shopping, the market will be promoting activities for children and using street entertainers to help make the trip a full day out.

Anton is working closely with the established shops and businesses to encourage their involvement and to co-ordinate promotional activity.

He said: “The market is all about creating a bit of a buzz and getting people to come together to buy, sell, eat, talk and make new friends. A market is only as good as the town it is in and St Leonards is making all the running as a good ‘un”.

Local residents are also encouraged to get involved by volunteering a few hours of their time to help as stewards. This might involve helping set up and take down the market, offering information and advice to shoppers and making sure everything runs safely.

Anton added: “We are a friendly team and volunteering can help people get out of the house, make some new contacts and freshen up their skills for work. So, if you think this is for you, get in touch.”
