VOLUNTEERS have brightened up a community centre with a makeover.

The dedicated team from AmicusHorizon’s DIY SOS programme spent five weeks transforming the Downs Farm centre in Crowborough Road. A celebratory lunch was the held for the eight volunteers to mark their achievements.

They were presented with certificates of achievement, home decorating kits and vouchers to use at Brewers Decorating Store.

The walls and ceiling within the building have been given a fresh coat of paint, giving the centre a new look and feel.

AmicusHorizon’s DIY SOS programme, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, offers unemployed and low-waged volunteers the opportunity to learn DIY and decorating skills and techniques over a five-week course.

Vanessa Porter, project officer in community development at AmicusHorizon, said: “It’s amazing what the participants have achieved in such a short space of time. The centre is now much more welcoming and that’s down to the volunteers’ hard work. They can feel very proud of their efforts.”
