Success in drive to clean up underpass following campaign

A MAJOR clean-up of an underpass is on the cards following a campaign by Hastings MP Amber Rudd and resident Vivien Harrison.

They pressured Network Rail into clearing up the Bethune Tunnel, ridding it of rubbish and graffiti.

Ms Rudd said: “I was delighted to hear that Network Rail is finally going to take responsibility for the state that the Bethune Tunnel has got into. It now plans a major clean-up of the tunnel, and a programme of regular maintenance. With this being such a popular cut-through for pedestrians from Alexandra Park to the town centre, it was terrible that it had got into such a state. And more importantly with a children’s nursery at one end of the tunnel, it just wasn’t on that parents and their young children should be expected to walk through a tunnel in that condition.”

“I’d like to thank Vivien Harrison for her determination to see this situation resolved and provide a clean and welcoming environment for local residents and visitors to our town. She has worked very closely with me in ensuring we get Network Rail to take responsibility.”
