Students proving class act with opera

STUDENTS are set to prove they are a class act on stage after receiving £400 worth of music equipment.

The Lodge St Michael masons donated the new guitars, ukuleles and music stands to Helenswood Academy.

The students are using the equipment in their rehearsals for their new opera entitled Brave Enough To Be Yourself.

They formed an opera company called Speaking From Song and rehearse and prepare in their own time outside of school hours.

It has been written in commemoration of those who fought and gave their lives in the First Worlds War and involves more than 200 students.

The students have designed the set, costumes, props and lighting and are running the entire event themselves.

It is hoped to preview some scenes at the family afternoon of the Hastings Beer Festival in readiness for the performances

Music tutor Liz Mason said: “We were thrilled with the arrival of resources for our music department following a performance at Lodge St Michael last Christmas.

“The Lodge were so pleased with the singing of the Total Eclipse Upper School choir they donated all the money from their raffle to provide the equipment. Brave Enough to be Yourself’ has been written in commemoration of those who fought and gave their lives in the First World War. It is a truly remarkable and moving piece of work. There is a real sense of community and camaraderie building around this project which we know will be felt by all who see it. It has been an inspiration watching them rise to the challenge of writing something so totally out of their experience and writing such beautiful libretto.”

The show will run on July 10 and 11 at Helenswood Academy. Tickets cost £5 for adults and £2.50 for students and will be available from the end of June.
