St Leonards derelict building fire '˜accidental'

A fire which broke out in a derelict building over the weekend is believed to have started accidentally, the fire service has said.

Six fire engines from Hastings, Bexhill and Battle fire stations, along with three officers, raced to Chapel Park Road shortly after 5.20pm on Sunday (May 1).

Initially it was feared someone may be trapped inside the building, but fortunately the building was found to be empty.

Firefighters tackled the blaze on the first and second floor of the building and left the scene at around 10.45pm.

Crews returned to the scene at 8.30am the following day (May 2) to inspect the building.

Firefighters were called back again just before 9.40am, following concerns from neighbours that smoke appeared to be coming from the roof.

Fire crews dampened down and a further inspection of the site took place at 2.30pm.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service says it believes the fire started accidentally.

The premises has been left in the care of building control.
