St Leonards Rotary Club held its popular annual On Yer Bike event, which saw more than 420 people taking part.

Starting and finishing at the RNLI Lifeboat Station, at Hastings, cyclists had the choice of a 25-mile route to Pevensey Castle and return, or tackle the more strenuous 40-mile route which proceeds from Pevensey Castle to Herstmonceux Castle and returns along the Rickney Marsh road.

On Yer Bike, which is also known as the Castle Cycle Challenge, has raised more than £250,000 for charity and local good causes in the town since it was first launched back in 1988.

This year’s event saw a drop in the number of participants, as last year some 600 cyclists took part and raised more than £11,000 for charity.

Ray Howard, president of St Leonards Rotary Club, said he believed yesterday’s chilly weather was a main factor on why there was a drop.

But he said this year’s event went ‘really well’ and more than 250 people signed up on the day.
