The Big Top is in Hastings from Tuesday (August 12) as Billy Smart’s Circus visits town.
The circus rolls into Glyne Gap Circus Field in St Leonards for a week until Tuesday, August 19.
The show promises a host of international performers bringing a mix of acrobatics, comedy, juggling, illusion and aerial feats with live music.
Acts include Russian acrobats, The Asadullin Troupe, French foot juggler Germaine, Australian trapeze artists The Flying Aces, trampoline acrobats Team Fonz, swinging trapeze star Caroline, the X-Treme Brothers from Bucharest in Romania, Russian cube dancer Alina and clown Jonny Bogino.
The circus first began in the 1940s when the Billy Smart Circus appeared at Southall Park.
Billy Smart’s granddaughter Yasmine Smart said things had changed since its inception.
She said: “We’re proud to being Billy Smart’s Circus back to life as a touring circus. We have not tried to recreate the old Smart’s – it would be too big a tour in these times and styles have changed.
“This is a modern compact version designed for 21st century audiences.
“The circus as we know it was invented in London in 1768. Throughout its history the circus has always adapted and changed and it is arguably more in touch with its audience than any other art form.
“Our circus has changed since 1971 but to make this new version of our circus, we have kept two essential ingredients: quality to the very highest standard of performance and magic, the true magic of the Big Top.
“And we have also kept to the principle of including fresh young artists. This is a young company, a young show, a new generation of Billy Smart’s Circus.
“We are thrilled to be back and we believe the audience will be thrilled with our show.
“It’s a show for children and adults, it’s a very funny show.
“There is all sorts, jugglers, trapeze artists, clowns, trampolining, there is so much to see.”
Performances are at 2.30pm and 7pm every day starting from Tuesday.
Next Sunday (August 17), performances are at 12.30pm and 3.30pm.
Tickets for adults range from £12 to £28 and for children, £10 to £24.
