A NURSE has won an award in recognition of his work helping those with diabetes.
Erwin Castro, diabetes specialist nurse at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs the Conquest Hospital and Eastbourne’s DGH, will be presented with the Quality in Care Award for Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award next month.
He was nominated by Amanda Combes, diabetes specialist nurse, for the accolade, who described him as ‘very passionate about improving the care of inpatients with diabetes through education’.
Erwin has introduced several initiatives including Diabytes, a bi-monthly electronic update for trained nurses, which is displayed in all the wards, and been instrumental in ensuring that medical teams receive updates on diabetes management.
He is often asked to deliver sessions on diabetes modules at the University of Brighton. Erwin has also re-established regular training for community nurses on diabetes.
Dr Umesh Dashora, clinical lead for diabetes, said: “Erwin is a very enthusiastic, proactive, positive, motivational, funny, engaging and knowledgeable teacher. We are very lucky to have him in our team.”
