New group set up to help those with dementia and their carers

A NEW group has been set up to help those suffering from dementia, their carers and families.

Hastings and St Leonards Dementia Support was launched by Steve Nuttall and a group of carers with the aim of enabling everyone in town affected by the condition to know what services are available to them.

Mr Nuttall said: “There is presently no single information point in our area which lists all the services available to people with dementia so a group of carers for people with dementia decided to launch the Facebook page -Hastings and St Leonards Dementia Support - to address that problem.

“The aim of the group is simple, that all people in our area who are affected by dementia know of all the support services available to them.

“The group is inviting all providers of dementia support services and dementia-friendly businesses in our area to post their offerings on the Facebook page in simple what, where, when, and how terms.

“Once there is a comprehensive list the group will get it printed up and have it made available to people with dementia through their GPs, dementia health workers and social workers.”

Last December the Government revealed than less than half of dementia sufferers in Hastings and Rother were currently being given an official diagnosis, meaning they are left facing the condition without medication or expert support.

Figures released by the Department of Health revealed just 44.5 per cent of people with dementia in 1066 Country ever receive a diagnosis

Nationally the best diagnosis levels are 75 per cent - with a bottom rate of 32 per cent. The country-wide average is 48 per cent, meaning local figures are below the national average.

Dementia Friends, an initiative set up by the Alzheimer’s Society, is holding an infortmation session for those interested in learning more about dementia and how to support sufferers.

It will be held at Park Beck Care Home, Upper Maze Hill, St Leonards, from 3pm to 4pm.
