A MAN has appeared in court today (Thursday) charged with murdering his five-week-old baby in St Leonards.
Mark Sandland, 27, of The Tubman public house, Cambridge Road, Hastings, appeared in the dock at Brighton Magistrates Court flanked by two security guards.
Wearing a grey t-shirt, the heavily tattooed Sandland spoke only to confirm his name.
During the initial 10-minute hearing, magistrates wrongly imposed a Section 39 Order to prevent the identity being revealed of the dead child.
Sandland is charged with killing Aimee Rose-Sandland on the night of November 9, 2012, at an address in St Leonards, following an incident that occurred on Nov 5.
After a joint challenge from the Hastings Observer, the BBC and Meridian ITV News, the clerk of the court Sandra Cryan told the bench it had no powers to impose a Section 39 Order.
After a 90-minute delay to proceedings, Sandland was remanded in custody to appear before Lewes Crown Court tomorrow morning (Friday).
