LONDON in just over an hour took a step closer to reality yesterday when a high level rail summit was held in Hastings.
Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin attended the event held at Sussex Coast College which was organised by MP Amber Rudd.
The focus of the discussion was the electrification of the rail line between Hastings and Rye through to Ashford and direct to London.
Ms Rudd said: “We achieved an absolute commitment from Network Rail to deliver High Speed One in Hastings and Rye.
“Improved rail links are an essential part of the economic growth for Hastings and Rye. I am ambitious for our success.
“Together we secured a fast ‘Hastings Express’ service and saved the 0639 Cannon Street route, and I know that with the support of local rail groups, commuters, councils, Network Rail and the Department for Transport I can deliver this new rail line for Hastings.”
“Network Rail revealed that there exists a strong business case and a “compelling argument”, for a fundamental step change to the service operated over the Marshlink line.”
