Councillors ended weeks of debate by naming the controversial Hastings to Bexhill Link Road after its scenic setting.

Rother District Council chose ‘Combe Valley Way’ from a shortlist of six names at a meeting yesterday.

The shortlist chosen following an Observer competition.

Several campaigns had sprung up for the road to be named after aspects of the history of the area, including some that put forward the names of local war veterans.

But an RDC spokesman said Combe Valley Way was the “clear winner”.
