THE annual Hastings Borough Bonfire Society’s Ladies Wot Walk event takes place this Sunday (May 18).
This colourful and offbeat fundraiser sees the ladies as men and the men as ladies as cross-dressing becomes the order of the day with plenty of imagination and make-up.
This year the Ladies Wot Walk event begins at the White Rock Hotel where participants will gather there from noon, before leaving at 1pm to meander through the town centre before ending at the Stag Inn in All Saints Street in the Old Town.
Money raised will go towards funding this year’s bonfire and firework display, held in October.
Nick Lynas, chairman of Hastings Borough Bonfire Society (HBBS), said: “The Hastings Bonfire and firework display costs many thousands of pounds to put on for the people of the town.
“This event is fun, colourful and unusual and has become one of the favourites in our fundraising calendar.”
The premise is simple. Men dress as ladies and women get in touch with their masculine side to come up with a costume, before promenading through the town.
To join the event, sponsorship forms are available from www.hbbs.info. There is a £5 entry fee.
This year’s bonfire and firework display takes place on Saturday, October 18.
The HBBS event is virtually self-funded apart from a small grant from Hastings Borough Council and in 2013, a grant from The Foreshore Trust.
The society still has to raise more than £14,000 each year, most of which is spent on insurance and security for the bonfire event.
More than 20,000 people lined the streets of the Old Town last year for the procession before the lighting of the effigy.
