Hastings Borough Council’s cabinet agreed to purchase Aquila House at a meeting on Monday, April 4, after the freeholders wanted sell the building.

The local authority uses most of the building’s offices and plans to move council meetings there after the town hall was taken over by the register office.

Members agreed that buying the freehold would save money as it would be cheaper than renting it, according to the minutes.

The council currently pays £236,000 per year to rent Aquila House and buying it outright would remove the risk of future rental increases as well as providing an income stream through the other shops based there.

Another benefit would be that any changes or maintenance could be done without the freeholders permission.
