THE VOTES are in and the Observer is pleased to announce the winner of this year’s Chippy of the Year competition is the Old Town Fryer in Hastings.

The family-run East Beach Street establishment received the most nominations to win the £100 first prize and framed certificate.

Originally a coffee shop, the business was converted into a fish restaurant in 2012.

It has two floors of seating to fit 80 people and welcomes large coach parties and families. They use the best suppliers in the trade to make sure they serve the best quality to their customers.

All the staff at Old Town Fryer are extremely proud to receive the title and would like to thank their customers for voting for them.

In second place was Smiffy’s Chippy in Robertson Street, also in Hastings. It is a long time established business with a great local following. Owner Remzi Tanriverdi declined to take second but thanked all his customers for their loyalty and support.

Third place went to Battersbys of Bodiam Drive, St Leonards.

A family business run by Stuart, Sam and Steve Foley, Battersbys has been established for 15 years and has customers from Rye and Bexhill.

Kerry Stevens, newspaper sales representative, said: “We wish all the winners our congratulations and good luck with their businesses.

“It has been a great competition which has really fired everyone’s’ imagination and enthusiasm for the nation’s favourite dish.”
