A GROUP of lucky young people will be heading to this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.
StreetGames has given the Hastings project 20 tickets for the games from July 25 to July 27.
Ken Dullaway, Hastings Borough Council’s StreetGames coordinator, together with three other sports leaders will be taking 16 young people on the trip and is aiming to raise the travel funds for them all himself by losing 50lb.
He said: “We are very fortunate to have been given these tickets but we need to raise money for travel and overnight accommodation. I will be looking for sponsorship for every pound I lose to help take the young people of Hastings to Glasgow for an experience of a lifetime.
“I need to raise £2,500 which together with the support from Stagecoach and its generous, low cost travel offer we should have enough funds for the 16 youngsters to travel and stay for the games at no cost to them at all. Supported by Freedom Leisure, Bodyfit, Fatofffiton, Samurai Fight Club and International Karate Jutsu Kai I have started a rigorous fitness and diet schedule which should help me to achieve my goal.”
Nicole White, Falaise Fitness centre manager, said: “We are delighted to support Ken with such a fantastic cause. To help him with his challenge we have enrolled him on our Biggest Loser style competition which starts on May 10, and we anticipate that he will do really well. He’ll be joined by 11 other customers whose goal is to lose weight and get started on a healthier lifestyle, so they will all be motivating each other.”
Jane Ashworth, chief executive officer, of StreetGames, said: “Ken’s weight loss challenge is a fantastic example of someone going the extra mile to give the young people in his area a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Commonwealth Games will be a truly inspiring event, and at StreetGames we will be harnessing the opportunity to get more people playing. We’re extremely proud of Ken’s commitment to the young people of Hastings.”
Some businesses have already pledged support and Hastings Round Table has given a £500 donation. To pledge support for Ken email firstname.lastname@example.org or ring 01424 451109.
